How Counseling Can Help

Autism and ADHD can affect people in different ways, and support should reflect each person's individual strengths, needs, and goals. Counseling can provide a supportive space to better understand patterns, develop practical strategies, strengthen coping skills, and address mental health concerns that may occur alongside neurodivergence.

Counseling may help with:

  • Emotional Regulation – Building skills to recognize, understand, and manage strong emotions, frustration, and emotional overwhelm.
  • Executive Functioning – Developing strategies for organization, planning, time management, task initiation, and completing responsibilities.
  • Anxiety & Overthinking – Learning ways to manage excessive worry, stress, racing thoughts, and feeling overwhelmed.
  • Depression & Self-Esteem – Addressing low mood, negative self-talk, decreased motivation, and challenges with confidence or self-worth.
  • Attention & Focus – Exploring practical strategies for managing distractions, maintaining attention, and completing everyday tasks.
  • Relationships & Communication – Strengthening communication skills, navigating conflict, understanding relationship patterns, and building meaningful connections.
  • School & Work Challenges – Developing strategies for managing expectations, responsibilities, transitions, deadlines, and stress.
  • Routines & Transitions – Building strategies to manage changes in routine, transitions, and everyday demands.
  • Understanding Yourself – Increasing awareness of individual strengths, needs, patterns, and experiences while developing strategies that work for you.

Counseling is individualized to each client. The goal is not to change who someone is, but to provide support, practical tools, and strategies that can make everyday life more manageable and meaningful.

ADHD Counseling for Children & Adults

ADHD can affect much more than attention. Children and adults with ADHD may experience challenges with organization, time management, motivation, impulsivity, emotional regulation, relationships, and completing everyday responsibilities. These difficulties can sometimes contribute to frustration, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, or feeling overwhelmed.

ADHD counseling focuses on understanding how ADHD affects the individual and developing practical strategies that fit their needs, strengths, and daily life.

Counseling may help with:

  • Organization & Planning – Developing systems for managing responsibilities, schedules, schoolwork, work tasks, and everyday routines.
  • Time Management – Building awareness of time and learning strategies for prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and reducing procrastination.
  • Task Initiation & Completion – Identifying barriers to getting started and developing realistic strategies for following through.
  • Attention & Focus – Learning practical approaches for managing distractions and improving engagement with important tasks.
  • Emotional Regulation – Building skills for managing frustration, irritability, overwhelm, and strong emotional reactions.
  • Impulsivity – Increasing awareness of impulsive patterns and practicing strategies that support more intentional decision-making.
  • Motivation – Exploring strategies for managing tasks that feel boring, repetitive, difficult, or overwhelming.
  • Self-Esteem – Addressing negative self-talk, discouragement, and feelings of failure that can develop after repeated struggles.
  • Relationships – Improving communication and addressing ADHD-related patterns that may affect family, friendships, school, work, or romantic relationships.

ADHD Support for Different Stages of Life:

For children and teens, counseling may include age-appropriate strategies for emotional regulation, school challenges, routines, organization, confidence, and relationships. Parent involvement may also be incorporated when appropriate.

For adults, counseling may focus on executive functioning, work and home responsibilities, relationships, stress management, emotional regulation, and developing systems that are realistic and sustainable.

Treatment is individualized rather than one-size-fits-all. Together, the counselor and client identify the areas creating the most difficulty and develop practical strategies that support greater confidence and functioning in everyday life.

Autism Counseling for Children & Adults

Autistic individuals experience the world in unique ways, with their own strengths, needs, communication styles, and challenges. Counseling can provide a supportive environment for children and adults to better understand themselves, navigate everyday stressors, develop coping strategies, and address mental health concerns.

Autism counseling is individualized to the person rather than focused on changing autistic traits or expecting someone to fit a particular definition of “normal.”

Counseling may provide support with:

  • Emotional Regulation – Identifying emotions, recognizing signs of overwhelm, and developing strategies for managing strong emotional responses.
  • Anxiety & Stress – Building coping skills for worry, uncertainty, social situations, changes, and everyday stress.
  • Communication – Exploring strategies that support effective communication of thoughts, feelings, needs, and boundaries.
  • Relationships & Social Experiences – Navigating friendships, family relationships, dating, workplace relationships, and other interpersonal experiences.
  • Sensory & Emotional Overwhelm – Increasing awareness of situations that contribute to overwhelm and developing individualized coping strategies.
  • Routines & Transitions – Building strategies for navigating unexpected changes, new environments, transitions, and disruptions to routines.
  • Self-Esteem & Identity – Supporting greater self-understanding, confidence, self-acceptance, and recognition of individual strengths.
  • School & Work Stress – Addressing stress related to expectations, communication, responsibilities, relationships, and daily demands.
  • Anxiety, Depression & Other Mental Health Concerns – Addressing emotional and mental health concerns that may occur alongside autism.

Individualized Support:

There is no single autism experience, and counseling should reflect that. Treatment is tailored to each client's age, communication preferences, strengths, concerns, and personal goals.

For children and teens, counseling may also include collaboration with parents or caregivers when appropriate. For adults, counseling may provide space to explore relationships, work, independence, emotional well-being, identity, and the experience of navigating adulthood as an autistic person.

The goal of counseling is not to make someone “less autistic.” Instead, therapy focuses on supporting emotional well-being, developing useful strategies, strengthening self-understanding, and helping clients navigate challenges in ways that respect who they are.

Counseling for Children & Teens

Children and teens with ADHD or autism may experience challenges with emotions, school, friendships, routines, communication, or adjusting to changes. Counseling provides a supportive environment where young people can better understand themselves, develop practical coping skills, and build confidence in navigating everyday challenges.

Counseling may help children and teens with:

  • Emotional Regulation – Learning to identify emotions and develop healthy ways to manage frustration, anger, anxiety, and overwhelm.
  • School Challenges – Building strategies for organization, attention, completing assignments, managing expectations, and coping with school-related stress.
  • Executive Functioning – Developing age-appropriate skills for planning, organization, time management, routines, and completing tasks.
  • Anxiety & Worry – Learning coping strategies for excessive worry, uncertainty, new situations, and stressful experiences.
  • Friendships & Social Experiences – Navigating friendships, communication, boundaries, conflict, and other social situations.
  • Self-Esteem & Confidence – Helping young people recognize their strengths while addressing negative self-talk, frustration, or feeling different from others.
  • Routines & Transitions – Developing strategies for changes in schedules, new environments, transitions, and unexpected situations.
  • Communication – Building skills for expressing emotions, needs, concerns, and boundaries.
  • Family Relationships – Supporting healthier communication and understanding between children, teens, parents, and caregivers.

Supporting Parents & Caregivers:

Parents and caregivers can be an important part of the counseling process. When appropriate, counseling may include parent collaboration, education, and practical strategies that can be reinforced at home.

Every child and teen is different. Treatment is individualized based on developmental needs, strengths, concerns, and goals rather than expecting every young person with ADHD or autism to respond to the same approach.

Our goal is to provide a supportive space where children and teens can develop skills, increase self-understanding, and feel more confident navigating home, school, relationships, and everyday life.

Counseling for Adults

ADHD and autism can continue to affect many areas of life throughout adulthood. Managing work responsibilities, relationships, household tasks, emotions, schedules, and everyday expectations can sometimes feel overwhelming. Some adults may also be exploring what neurodivergence means for them and how it has influenced their experiences throughout life.

Counseling provides a supportive space to better understand your individual strengths, needs, and patterns while developing practical strategies for the areas of life that are creating difficulty.

Counseling may help adults with:

  • Executive Functioning – Developing practical strategies for organization, planning, prioritizing, time management, and completing tasks.
  • Work & Career Stress – Navigating deadlines, workplace expectations, communication, organization, burnout, and maintaining balance.
  • Emotional Regulation – Recognizing emotional patterns and developing strategies for managing frustration, irritability, stress, and overwhelm.
  • Relationships & Communication – Improving communication, understanding relationship patterns, establishing boundaries, and navigating conflict.
  • Anxiety & Depression – Addressing worry, low mood, negative self-talk, stress, and other mental health concerns that may occur alongside ADHD or autism.
  • Routines & Daily Responsibilities – Creating realistic systems for managing household responsibilities, appointments, schedules, and everyday demands.
  • Overwhelm & Burnout – Identifying sources of ongoing stress and developing strategies to support emotional well-being and sustainable routines.
  • Self-Esteem & Confidence – Addressing feelings of inadequacy, repeated frustration, and negative beliefs that may have developed over time.
  • Self-Understanding – Exploring how ADHD or autism may influence your experiences while identifying strengths, needs, and strategies that work for you.

Support That Fits Your Life:

There is no single way to experience ADHD or autism. Counseling is individualized around your concerns, strengths, goals, and everyday experiences.

Whether you have known you are neurodivergent for years or are learning more about how ADHD or autism affects your life, counseling can provide a place to develop greater self-understanding, address mental health concerns, and build practical strategies for navigating adulthood.

What to Expect

Starting counseling is an individual experience, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to working with ADHD or autism. At Brighter Day Counseling, services are tailored to each client's strengths, concerns, needs, and personal goals.

Your First Appointment

Your first appointment provides an opportunity for your counselor to learn more about you, your current concerns, personal history, strengths, and what you hope to gain from counseling. Together, you and your counselor will identify treatment goals and discuss an approach that fits your individual needs.

Individualized Counseling

Depending on your goals, counseling may include practical coping strategies, emotional regulation skills, executive functioning support, communication skills, stress management, and treatment for concerns such as anxiety or depression.

For children and teens, parents or caregivers may be involved in treatment when appropriate to support progress and reinforce helpful strategies outside of counseling.

A Collaborative Approach

Counseling is a collaborative process. You and your counselor will regularly discuss what is helpful, identify areas that need additional attention, and adjust treatment goals as your needs change.

Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where you can better understand yourself, build useful skills, and develop strategies that work in your everyday life.
